Lessons Are Tailored To Suit You
In-person & Online Lessons
One-to-one tuition is based around Voice and Keyboard (piano/organ). Incorporating a host of historical practices which teach technique and improvisation, we always begin with familiar/favourite music – you will learn several different ways to ‘solmize’ (the language of melody), and ‘speak’ musical ideas/inventions by singing and adding elements at the keyboard.
These aural and creative skills are transferred to the 10 fingers, and we develop the techniques of keyboard playing; first through imitation and improvisation, then with building on that with written music. Although the approach is primarily aural, throughout this journey we expand your newfound abilities to reading/writing. The goal of this discipline is to expand the imagination. We will not only sing/play what the eyes see, but sing/play/write what the mind’s ear hears.
At each lesson, I provide new material created for you, in which the principles of the lesson (the “theory”) are conveyed by new practice material (often related to any music you want to learn). This allows you to develop technique as well as practice aural and creative skills outside of the lesson.
Group Lessons
Any instruments/voices welcome. The core element of Group Lessons is ‘aural skills’ and creative response to a stimulus. The fastest way to become fluent is by ‘speaking’ with others.
Students learn to listen to each other and themselves simultaneously. As with individual lessons, our raw material is music that everyone knows, which forms the basis for improvisation. In this way of developing the art of listening, and using your growing vocabulary of melodic counterpoint, the goal is group improvisation; an “art of imperfection”.
Group tuition occurs out of Term Time.
